An orchestral tribute to The Beatles, Queen and The Rolling Stones. A concert with guitarist Dweezyl Zappa (son of). The Noord Nederlands Orkest (NNO) has a reputation to uphold when it comes to adventurous crossover projects.

This month, the orchestra toured the country with symphonic edited songs from Prince (1958-2016), the legendary funk, pop, and rock musician who prevented his androgynous, and listened to plain lyrics as His Royal Badness. His pumping funk rhythms and bright, neon-colored synthesizer sounds will also have a bearing on the erotic seductive power of his music.

Prior to the kick-off of A Symphonic Tribute to Prince, Thursday in Leeuwarden, you asked your benevolence for an orchestra to have to interfere acoustically with that. Apparently the NNO itself had asked that question. In, among others, When Doves Cry, Kiss, Diamonds and Pearls and 1999, the singers Jennie Lena (finalist The Voice of Holland, 2015) and Boris (winner Idols, 2004) were accompanied by a tightly playing electrically enhanced combo, with a strong soloing in it Femke IJlstra (saxophone) and Joost Vergoossen (electric guitar).

Power ballads
Where the share of the NNO was greater, came from conductor Dirk Brossé. His exquisite flea arrangements got the best out of the paint in climax-seeking power ballads such as Purple Rain and The Beautiful Ones, true long strings, hot-glowing copper and some pungent oboe or trumpet parts. The dream frame formed a rosen phenomenal singing Lena.

Paradoxically, Brossé's unmistakable craftsmanship sometimes had the opposite effect. For example, the smoldering harmonies of Scandalous (on the Batman album with sleezy synth strings) dissolve their barbs in a smoothly folding string sound. In Pop Life, funky turned into a brave cocktail sound.

Boris showed that he has a great baritone, but even a screechingly high Robert Plantje (Darling Nikki). It is a pity that some of his performances suffered from forced dance steps. Then nice and sultry sung R & B, just on a bar stool (Joy in Repetition), made more impression.
