6: THE SQUARE zooms in on mankind’s need to create order in a continually changing world: marking out, creating frameworks, drawing boundaries, pigeon-holing; square. What role does this man-made shape play in our society? In a festive ritual, eight dancers and one actress lead you through an impalpable landscape of possibilities.
In this second part of Nicole’s BAUHAUS trilogy about the basic principles of the circle, square and triangle, Nicole expresses the constant tension between abstract and organic. The square brings calm and regularity. It frames things, yet also shuts them out. It is restrictive, yet safe. Along with DJ/composer Gary Shepherd, lighting designer Minna Tikkainnen and costume designer Jessica Helbach, Nicole drives the ‘square’ to its limits and makes tangible our deeply rooted desire for nuance, poetry and vitality.
Inspired by the mathematical efficiency of urban city life, the magical abstract art of Piet Mondriaan and the hierarchical patterns of the American Square Dance, 6: THE SQUARE is a plea for freedom, in which dance, fashion, visual art and contemporary electronic music come together.
